The rate of expansion of the internet video consumer base is continuing to explode. According to ABI Research broadband video consumers currently number around 300 million.

By ABI’s estimates, we’ll be looking at an internet video community of a billion by the time 2012 rolls around. This appears to be on par with other research studies and the penetration of broadband subscribers.

According to Michael Wolf, director of ABI, there will be significant growth in advertising revenue from user generated video content:

“User-generated content will be ad-supported, as sites such as YouTube and social networking sites make increasing use of content produced by their own users as a way to drastically increase their inventory of premium advertising opportunities.”

What’s more, Wolf suggests that there’s room for significant growth in the pay-video sector, with applications such as iTunes set to rake in the revenue as users increasingly turn to the internet in order to access premium video content.

This is all just another long line of confirmations that the internet video industry will continue to grow and boom over the next 5 years.
