Sky News has become the latest addition Jalipo, the online marketplace that allows television and video companies to offer their broadcasting services to a worldwide audience. After a quick sign-up and monetary deposit, you can watch the news service instantly online.

Rupert Murdoch’s British channel joins a growing selection of other video-on-demand services already available on the portal, includes sporting events, entertainment and movies. The likes of Al Jazeera English, Urban Gothic and Ballroom Boxing are up and running, although the choice is still somewhat limited at present.

Sky News’ John Ryley explained that appearing on Jalipo was important as part of the channel’s continued innovation:

“Sky News’ ambition is to make breaking news available through as many routes as possible, recognising the changing habits of consumers everywhere. This trial will allow us to understand how we can deliver that across Europe, alongside our strong television audience.”

Users of Jalipo purchase the site’s J-Credits currency (available from £5 GPB/$10 USD for 980 credits), with streaming charged at a rate of varying ‘credits per minute’ depending on the video. News works out at around $1 an hour, handy for someone wanting to keep tabs on the latest goings on at home in France via France 24 or DW-World, perhaps?

The simple, clean and stylish layout of Jalipo is really its selling point at the moment. With a few more partners, its founders just might be on the verge of something truly successful.
