SeeSaw Shutting Down As Arqiva Fails To Find A Buyer or Partner For TV Catch-Up Service

Posted on Saturday 28 May 2011

SeeSaw-LogoAfter failing to find either a buyer or investment partner Arqiva has decided to pull the plug on SeeSaw, its online video catch-up service that struggled to find its niche. No great surprise really, but it’s still disappointing.

SeeSaw Shuts

SeeSaw is shutting, with owner Arqiva announcing as much with a short message posted on Friday (May 27). It read:

“As it will soon be ‘goodbye’ from Seesaw, we’d like to take this opportunity to say a big ‘thanks’ for all your support, custom and loyalty over the last 16 months. We’re a small team but we hope we’ve made a big difference and that you’ve had fun watching TV with us.”

Arqiva set SeeSaw in motion from the ashes of Project Kangaroo, purchasing the infrastructure from the BBC and its partners for around £8 million.

Often referred to as the British Hulu (because the real British Hulu failed to materialize) SeeSaw has only made it to the 16-month mark before being shuttered. Which has to be seen as a warning to other companies seeking to launch similar services.

YouTube Celebrates Sixth Birthday | 3 Billion Views Per Day, 48 Hours Of Video Per Minute

Posted on Friday 27 May 2011

YouTube 3D LogoYouTube is now officially six-years-old, having launched in beta in May 2005.

That seems like a lifetime ago and, judging by the way the online video site has evolved and grown over that time, it may as well be.

YouTube Is Born

YouTube co-founders Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim, all of whom are now much richer than most of us can even ever dream of being, first registered the YouTube domain in February 2005. Three months later and they launched the site that is now known and used the world over.

It quickly became a hit thanks to how easy it made uploading videos to the Web, a new concept back then. It also, it has to be said, helped that copyrighted clips were rife on YouTube, with full films shown in multiple 10-minute blocks.

It only took 18 months for YouTube to have reached such a level that Google acquired it for a whopping $1.65 billion in October 2006. A sum of money it has been chasing to make back in revenue ever since.
