This US Presidential Election has utilised the Web like never before, with the candidates using social media and Internet sites to their own advantage in ways unknown to previous White House contenders.
This battle has also seen Web video used as a tool to push the candidate’s agendas, with sites such as YouTube full of campaign videos and videos of supporters of one candidate obliterating the other candidate.
The Presidential Debates
And now, with less than a month to go until the election is held, comes the big one – the presidential debates between Barack Obama and John McCain, which is available to watch online for free from a number of different sources.
Arguably the biggest site to be showing the debates is Hulu, which is taking its first tentative steps in to live streaming with the debate tonight (October 7th) and again on October 15th. Hulu will stream NBC’s coverage of Tonight’s debate from Belmont University in Nashville, and then stream Fox News’ coverage of the debate on the 15th. Hulu is a joint venture between the two broadcasters. But there’s also a host of other websites offering live streaming of the events. Newscasters such as CNN, MSNBC, CBS, ABC, and Fox will be offering it’s own coverage, all no doubt complete with the views of political commentators on both sides. MySpace has a dedicated site for the 2008 Presidential Debates, while Current TV and C-Span are offering their own takes on the debates. Then of course there is YouTube. If you miss the live streaming coverage, you’ll be able to find the highlights on YouTube complete with political posturing taking place in the comments section. Web television is allowing more people than ever to watch and have their say on he Presidential campaigns.
