Sony Playstation PortableThe first official video download service for the Sony PSP console was announced back in April, with a vague summer release date. Today, it finally launched, with Sony and Sky bringing mobile video to European gamers.

The video-on-demand service is now available in the UK and the Republic of Ireland. Whether the timing of the launch was planned to coincide with E3 or not isn’t clear, but it wouldn’t surprise me.

TV and Movie Content

The service works by allowing subscribers to download programmes to their PC, before transferring them to their PSP consoles. Most of the content is currently from TV, though there are also some movies available.

Content partners include Disney, ABC, ESPN, the BBC, Sony Pictures, NBC, National Geographic and Sky Sports. Which between them mean a big variety of programming is available from day one., with the promise of more to come.

Range Of Packages Available

The service isn’t free, but potential subscribers do have package options to choose from. There are three packs: comedy, sport and entertainment, which cost £5 each. Or you can have 2 for £8, or all 3 for just £10. Which is very similar to how the main Sky TV packages work.

The official website is located here, where you can either sign up to one of the monthly packages, or trial them for a month to see if they appeal.
