For the past three years, it’s been the hidden search technology driving many of the video search sites on the internet. But now Truveo has decided to launch its brand independently and is claiming to be one of the largest video search engines on the web.

Founded in 2004, Truveo has provided video search technology to companies including AOL, Microsoft, CNET, Brightcove, Quest, Infospace and Excite. Through this network of sites, Truveo estimates it reaches an audience of over 40 million users per month.

In 2006, the company was acquired by AOL, which today unveiled the newly redesigned Truveo.com site – a site promoted to be a single place where users can find everything online video has to offer.

According to Timothy Tuttle, CEO of Tuveo, such a site doesn’t currently exist. He says:

We have all this high-quality professionally-produced video that is coming online and we are trying to make it easy for users to search across all of it.

Many of the videos in Tuveo’s search results can be played directly from within the site. However, some content providers, which prefer videos to be watched directly on their site - like TV networks – request that search engines link to the videos, which Tuveo has happily gone along with.

Tuveo is presented in a simple interface and users can easily select particular categories or channels to see all popular videos in that genre. The site will face competition from the likes of Blinkx.com, but is already superior to Google and Yahoo’s offerings according to some reports.
