Using in context text links to advertise on Brightcove videos

Posted on Saturday 16 December 2006

A publisher using the Brightcove online distribution system has created a neat application using the Brightcove APIs. BlennyLips.com, a scuba diving site, is using the application to present relevant text links with the video content as it plays.

The links appear in time with the creatures appearing on screen and link to further information on the animal. The video also features a Google Map showing the location of the dive site.

YouTube Logo

Rumors are continuing to circulate that many of the major television networks (and I assume movie studios too) are looking to bring to life a YouTube competitor. The plan is to launch the service and then initiate a full frontal legal attack on video sharing sites such asYouTube, forcing them to all pull unlicensed video.

Jeremy Allaire of Brightcove on the future of the internet television industry

Posted on Tuesday 12 December 2006

BrightCove Logo

Jeremy Allaire recently discussed the future of internet television during his Keynote speech at the Fall 2006 Video on the Net Conference. You can watch the 30 minute video of him below.

Jeremy was unsurprisingly focused on the Brightcove product, and I must admit, if I was a serious content creator I would be signing up and using Brightcove quicker than a cheetah that’s just been kicked in the balls.

Brightcove offers so much to anyone who has quality content to post on the internet with more monetization options than anywhere else and clear control over how the content is displayed and where it is syndicated. Much of the Jeremy’s talk discusses what Brightcove does, and if you have listened to any of Jeremy’s talks before it may sound familiar.

Linking to infringing content is probably illegal in the US

Posted on Saturday 9 December 2006

Summary: There have been 3 court cases in the US where sites were forced to take down links leading to infringing material on external sites. The sites were found guilty of ‘contributory infringement’ for simply linking.

Although unclear the law leans in favor of content owner so if you linked to copyrighted material and don’t take it down you could very well lose a legal battle and face huge legal fees. Even blogs are at risk!

Lock and ChainA large number of cases never reach the courts where sites are served with takedown notices and dare not risk ignoring them as they may otherwise face liability.

TV Show Directory QuickSilverScreen.com Threatened by Fox

Posted on Thursday 7 December 2006

Summary: QuickSilverScreen is a US based website that is being forced to shut down or be given away for free after Fox claimed that LINKING to TV Shows on video sharing sites like YouTube and DailyMotion is illegal. Fox also alledgedly claims the site cannot be sold by the owner so therefore it must be given away for free.

Quick Silver Screen

In case you havn’t noticed there have been a number of directories popping up that link to full TV shows that are available online through video sharing sites such as YouTube and DailyMotion.

A few examples are All About South Park, Daily Motion Episodes and IPTV To Me, and apparently under US law all these sites are illegal. One such site has been targeted by Fox and asked to shut down, this site is QuickSilverScreen.
