Roots Synopsis

Roots is a historical drama television series produced by ABC that premiered in January of 1977.

Based on the book Roots: The Saga of an American Family written by Alex Haley Roots follows the story of Kunta Kinte (played by LeVar Burton). Kunta Kinte is abducted by slave traders and then shipped to America and sold as a slave to a plantation owner John Reynolds (played by Lorne Greene). He makes a number of attempts to escape but he only succumbs to slave life after having half of his leg severed in a bid to prevent further escapes. Roots won a Peabody award and a Golden Globe and the finale of the show still ranks as third most watched program ever.
