Twango on Nokia N95

Twango, an online video, photo and document sharing site, has been acquired by Nokia, which is now poised to offer a global mobile media sharing service.

Having sold over 140 million mobile phones equipped with cameras in 2006, Nokia believes its devices are now one of the world’s primary sources for images and videos - many of which, no doubt, end up on sites like YouTube, MySpace and other social networking sites.

As such, it makes sense for Nokia to invest in social networking. According to the company, it has a vision of:

“providing seamless access to information, entertainment, and social networks – at any time, anywhere, from any connected device, in any way that you choose.”

Strategic Acquisition Gives Strength to Nokia Online

The acquisition of Tango adds photo, video and document sharing to Nokia’s current suite of connected multimedia experiences such as music, navigation and games.

It also brings to Nokia a team experienced in social media and web services – Twango was founded by formed “Microsoft veterans”, according to the press release.

The Twango management team now has the financial resources to expedite development of the service. Capturing media on a Nokia mobile device and sharing it with others, whether they are on a mobile or a desktop PC, should soon be a breeze.

This is a great example of a well planned corporate acquisition – One would imagine Nokia already has a massive tech savvy user base and this move could quickly see the company become a leader in online social networking and media sharing.
