Get yourself a Joost beta invite! | Competition

Posted on Wednesday 28 February 2007

Joost BetaEverybody but nobody wants to get their filthy hands on a beta copy of Joost, well at least anyone who can use a computer and likes a bit of free TV.

For those of you that don’t know, Joost is a new internet TV application from the makers of Skype and Kazaa, you can see a full review of Joost with screenshots here.

I promised you about a week ago some Joost invites. Your chance has now arrived to get a sneak peek at the P2P program that is being tipped to revolutionize the TV industry.

I’m giving away 20 Joost invites to anyone who is willing to take part in this quick competition:

The Joost invite competition:

  1. You must leave a comment to this post and state a SINGLE website that is EITHER a:
    1. Video search engine
      A video search indexes videos from multiple websites and uses textual information — and sometimes the speech within a video — to assign meta data to that video. Videos can be searched for by keyword and results can often be filtered by a variety of criteria such as length, quality etc. An example is searchforvideo.com.
      Video sharing websites like YouTube or DailyMotion will not be accepted.
    2. Community driven video aggregator
      A community driven video aggregator is a website where the community submits videos to the website from all over the web. The rest of the community then votes for the videos and the best videos get more exposure. An example is digg.com/videos.
      Video sharing websites like YouTube or DailyMotion will not be accepted.
    3. Video Blog Subscriber and Player
      This is usually a piece of software that allows you to subscribe to any video blog that has an RSS feed. It will automatically download the latest video and organize it into your own video library. Then you can just watch the latest episodes from your favorite video blogs or internet TV episodes when you want to. An example is Instant Media.
      Regular RSS readers that download enclosures will not be accepted.
  2. You must state the URL of the website and whether it is a video search engine, a community driven video aggregator, or a video blog subscriber.
  3. If someone has already posted that website correctly then you won’t be entered into the competition, so the earlier you leave your comment the easier it will be!
  4. The competition will close at midnight (EST) on Sunday 4th March and I’ll select 20 winners at random and email them a Joost invite.
  5. Only one entry per person.

Click here to leave your comment and enter the competition.

When it comes to the top video sharing websites on the internet the following websites are freqently mentioned:

  • YouTube

  • MetaCafe
  • Dailymotion
  • Veoh
  • Google Video
  • Grouper
  • Jumpcut
  • Eyespot
  • MSN SoapBox

So I thought it would be worthwhile to take a quick look to see just how popular these video sharing sites really are, and how their popularity compares.

I’ve just done this quickly using Alexa rank, its not the most accurate, but its the best we’ve got really. Here are the results:

Viacom: “Good-bye YouTube, Hello Joost!”

Posted on Tuesday 20 February 2007

Viacom Loves JoostI’ve just got news that Viacom will be teaming up with Joost to provide TV shows from MTV, BET Networks and Paramount Pictures on the P2P internet TV platform. This comes just weeks after Viacom laid into YouTube requesting it remove 100,000+ videos, and were accused of sending “bullshit” takedown notices.

But it looks like Viacom are happy to have their content online with Joost where they will likely get a much better revenue sharing deal, but probably a lot less viewers as it is going to be hard for Joost to reach anywhere near YouTube levels. The press release is below, and screenshots of Joost can be seen here.

Joost/Viacom Press Release

VIACOM TO BE KEY CONTENT PARTNER WITH JOOST™,
THE WORLD’S FIRST ONLINE GLOBAL TV DISTRIBUTION PLATFORM

Popular Programming from MTV Networks, BET Networks and Paramount Pictures Will Be Available for Joost’s Launch

Currently available in limited beta, Joost combines the best of TV and the best of the Internet by offering viewers a unique, TV-like experience enhanced with the choice, control and flexibility of Web 2.0.  Joost is the first online, global TV distribution platform, bringing together advertisers, content owners and viewers in an interactive, community-driven environment. Janus Friis, founder of Joost said, “We built this platform from the ground up, with companies like Viacom in mind. Our platform provides scalable distribution, in a completely safe environment that protects the interest of content owners and advertisers, while delighting viewers. We’re extremely excited about this partnership and look forward to enabling Viacom to reach new audiences for its new and classic programming.”

Joost goes Mac!

Posted on Saturday 17 February 2007

Joost LogoJoost, the P2P internet TV application from the creators of Skype and Kazaa, has launched version 0.8 of its beta along with a much needed Mac beta version too. The update has been accompanied by the addition of some much needed channels to Joost. Here’s what Joost had to say:

"Today we have good news, and we have great news. In addition to the 0.8 release which includes new CoreAVC Video decoder, which significantly improves the quality of the video, we also have an Intel Mac beta version.

In checking out the improved video quality, we also hope you’ll notice that we’ve added quite a lot of content and quite a few channels. These include:

  • Documentaries from National Geographic;
  • Loud noise and fast cars from the Indy Racing League;
  • Healthy living programming from Lime;
  • A variety of reality series in the Lazy TV channel from Endemol;
  • Cartoons like Rocky and Bullwinkle in Saturday Morning TV (Classic Media);
  • A lineup of independent film makers from IndieFlix;
  • More reality TV with the Bridezillas series from September Films;
  • Video gaming tricks and reviews form Gamestar;
  • Comical, irreverent and edgy programming from Bite TV
  • And cool new Bollywood music videos from Savvn.

The number one question that we’ve received throughout our beta period has been about when we’re going to make a Mac version available. We’re happy that we can finally say, that day has arrived!

The Mac version looks a lot like the Windows version but behaves like a Mac application. Note this beta is still Intel only."

Cuts.com Beta | Screenshots from the inside

Posted on Tuesday 13 February 2007

Last week I wrote about Cuts.com, the free video editing and remixing website, arriving in private beta and today I got an invite to try it out. I think I’m one of only 100 people who got invited. Here is what cuts.com said:

With just a few clicks our CutMaker helps you:
- Shorten a video to showcase the 2 minutes that matter
- Insert sound effects or your own laugh track to spice up any scene
- Offer a running text commentary to express your opinion or offer links to relevant sites
- Repeat something (over and over) to bring new life to a worthy moment or make the boring funny
- Create a combination of any or all of the above

It sounds good, looks good, and appears pretty simple. Take a look at the screenshot below:

Why Google is lying to TV Companies

Posted on Saturday 10 February 2007

Google LogoGoogle recently said it can’t do internet television because of inherent technical restrictions, while at the same time asking to partner with cable companies over video advertising. Is Google just tricking TV companies into a false sense of security while it slowly slips onto our TV sets?

Google’s head of TV technology, Vincent Dureau, recently said the following about TV over the internet:

“The Web infrastructure, and even Google’s [infrastructure] doesn’t scale. It’s not going to offer the quality of service that consumers expect”

Well I’d have to disagree, while the current infrastructure can’t support broadcast quality video on a large scale that is cost effective, it is simply a technology issue that is being tackled at an alarming rate.

Less than 10 years ago it wasn’t scalable to deliver even radio over the internet. Now delivering radio over the internet is an everyday thing, and internet radio is now being included as an option in Wi-Fi portable media devices.

So yes Google and the web can’t scale video today, but tomorrow it can. Within ten years we’ll think of delivering video over the internet as being just as easy as delivering radio over the net now. P2P technology is only going to make this easier. It’s not going to happen in the next 2 years, but it will happen within the next decade, maybe within even 5 years.

VideoCarLot | Videos for vehicle listings - another use for web video

Posted on Saturday 10 February 2007

VideoCarLot LogoRich media on the web is continuing to assist companies in a variety of ways to improve the customer’s experience. Be it through informative videos, comical videos, viral marketing or instructional videos; internet video is revolutionizing the web into an interactive and highly engaging experience.

VideoCarLot.com is a company that has innovated and provided internet car dealers with rich media platform to sell their cars. VideoCarLot brings video to car listings creating a rich experience for customers looking to buy vehicles.

VideoCarLot sample

The patent pending technology brings full motion video with special effects to create a slideshow of moving images for a rich media effect. It also includes background music and voice or Text-to-Speech description of the vehicle, dealership, and contact information. Unfortunately the sample on the website was a bit buggy so needs some work but it’s still a nice idea and could be applied to a variety of ecommerce stores selling different products.

- Save money on Milwaukee Car Insurance.
- Acura Car models are highly appreciated all over the world.
- The current models of the jeep automobile industry are available at much more affordable prices.
- If you never been in a Renault care then you are missing something very special.
- Aston Martin is still manufacturing outstanding vehicles and fascinating the world.
In many motorsports Ferrari has achieved marvelous victories.
