YouTube Live Streaming On Google+ Hangouts

Posted on Sunday 31 July 2011

Google+ LogoUsers of Google+ Hangouts, the live group video chat component of the fledgling social network, can now watch live streaming YouTube video as well as pre-recorded video. And the level of integration is set to grow from here on in.

Social Video Viewing

Social video viewing is a relatively new concept which is becoming standard. The idea is that rather than watching a video online by yourself, you watch it with others who can then discuss it or simply enjoy it with you. Think of it as a giant Web-shaped sofa in front of a TV.

Many video sites now integrate with Facebook and/or Twitter to allow people to carry on the conversation about what they’re watching simply and speedily. But YouTube has a new weapon in its arsenal. Google+ (Google Plus).

WalMart Integrates Vudu For Mainstream Appeal

Posted on Saturday 30 July 2011

Vudu-Wal-Mart-LogoWalMart is finally integrating Vudu into its main website, thereby taking the streaming service well and truly into the mainstream. Should Netflix and all the other companies already competing in this sector be looking over their shoulders?

WalMart Adopts Vudu

Vudu was doing pretty well(although clearly not well enough) as a hardware-based video platform before WalMart acquired the company early in 2010. Since then Vudu has been made available on 300-plus connected devices as the giant retailer seeks to make its acquisition pay.

Now comes phase two of that effort, with WalMart truly trying to send Vudu over the top to become a mainstream option and a household name. Where it will have to compete with Netflix, the current online video darling of the mainstream.

BBC Worldwide Launches Paid-For iPlayer App For Apple iPad - First Europe, Then America

Posted on Friday 29 July 2011

iPlayer iPadBBC Worldwide has finally deigned to bring iPlayer to more than just those of us in the U.K. Unfortunately it hasn’t got the licensing in place to bring it to the United States quite yet.

Global iPlayer App

There has been talk of an international version of iPlayer for some time, with viewers in the U.S. being particularly keen on the idea, even though they know they’d have to pay for it.

America is going to have to wait a little while longer (the US, Canada, and Australia are expected to gain the app within months) but 11 European countries have now been blessed with iPlayer for the Apple iPad. This is seen as a year-long experiment to see how successful a wider and longer rollout would prove to be.

For 6.99 Euros-per-month or 49.99 Euros-per-year iPad owners can gain on-demand access to 1,500 hours of content which includes both new and classic shows. Doctor Who, Fawlty Towers, Only Fools and Horses, and Sherlock are just some of the shows featured.
