It’s a well-known fact that porn can make or break a platform. It’s why VHS succeeded over Betamax in the days when streaming video was just a futuristic notion. Will the same policy work for Google TV?
Google TV
Google TV was launched last year to a fanfare of almost zero interest. The problem was all the good content was blocked from being streamed via the set-top boxes, which left users with little content to choose from. At least little content they had any interest in watching.
An update has now arrived, but is that enough on its own to solve the problems the platform has experienced?
Perhaps it was the user interface that was the problem. Or the lack of Access to the Android Market maybe? Or perhaps it’s the lack of porn which did for Google TV? Yes, that was definitely the culprit. Fix that and Google TV will be the must-buy, super-sensation of the century.
Vivid Viewing
Vivid Entertainment is a big name in the porn industry. And it’s the first to offer a mainstream hardcore porn channel of sorts on Google TV. The channel is actually an HTML5-powered Web app which users will access via the Web browser. This means it will turn up on all future HTML5-capable connected devices.
Free to subscribers of the company’s website, the Vivid app will offer streaming movies, celebrity sex tapes, and spoofs of mainstream entertainment. All of an adult variety, naturally. This stuff is NSFW and not suitable for anyone under the age of 18 either.
Conclusions
The sad fact is that purveyors of porn are ahead of the game when it comes to new technology. They know that people want porn delivered to them in a variety of different ways and set about fulfilling that need using the tenet of supply and demand. So it stands to reason porn would make it to Google TV.
As you have to access the app on your own (rather than with directions from Google) and be an existing Vivid.com subscriber I cannot see too many complaints. And anyone that does should both learn how to block content and take one look on the Internet to see just how easy it is to see this stuff.
