YouTube LogoYouTube has just unveiled two new improvements to the service, an increase in file size from 100Mbs to 1024Mbs, and the ability to add annotations to videos using YouTube Annotations.

The file size increase would be more important were the 10 minute limit lifted along with it but for now, that isn’t the case. However, the massive jump in size possible does mean high resolution video now has a chance to shine.

I think we’ll see more and more people going the hi-res route now, and as Broadband speeds continue to improve, that trend is sure to continue.

YouTube Annotations

YouTube Annotations is the new ability to add text to videos. It allows you to place pop ups on the video while it plays back, which can contain links, notes about certain elements of the video, or simply additional information.

David Rodriguez at StuffWeLike has made a video showing how to use the YouTube Annotations feature, and it is embedded below.

Future Possibilities

Only content creators can add annotations to their own videos which makes sense so that not every Tom, Dick and Harry can just make random pop ups appear.

However, were there a way for YouTube to ensure spamming was prevented, maybe the feature could be rolled out to include commenters at a later date?
