It says right in our law books (the U.S. lawbooks) that ignorance of the law is no excuse, but at the same token, this only applies to U.S. law. Therefore their argument is moot unless a law is passed requiring all citizen of every nation ON EARTH to be compelled to be aware of/taught inter-nation copyright laws, AS WELL AS national copyright laws for each individual nation.
