Then she was exposed as being fictitious. Now, her creators have signed an exclusive deal with MySpaceTV – an indication that LoneyGirl15 is all grown up. MySpace today announced an exclusive deal to broadcast the season one finale of the famous LonelyGirl15 series. Dubbed “12 in 12”, the final episode will be shown in one to four minute segments over twelve consecutive hours. The first segment will be available on MySpaceTV at 8am Friday, August 3rd (EDT in the US), followed by eleven other segments on the hour every hour. The second series of the video blogger style videos, which feature a teenage girl named Bree, will commence on August 6th. MySpaceTV will soon launch a LonelyGirl15 branded video community in which viewers can watch new episodes and browse through any of the 245 previous episodes. I should note that the new series will also be shown on other select video distribution sites and is not exclusive to MySpaceTV. New Opportunities for Amateur Videos? The fact MySpaceTV has secured exclusive rights (all be it to the one episode) to what is still principally an amateur created video speaks volumes. Perhaps this is a sign of things to come – rather than people splashing the same content across many sites, video community sites like MySpaceTV may request exclusivity and in return offer to develop the creator’s brand. Whilst News Corp haven’t confirmed (or denied) the production, it’s alleged that a group of Hollywood talent has been assembled to start work on an original series. Having plenty of pull in the TV and media industry in general, it’s certainly not unfathomable that News Corp would try its hand at online TV. It already has a massive potential audience in its MySpace community. A Recipe for Success? Other social networking sites have produced original online TV show content before (Facebook and Bebo for example) – but not to the scale of what may end up on the MySpace site. It’s rumored the News Corp production budget is a massive $400,000 per episode! Add the budget with the MySpace community and News Corp’s media experience and it sounds like a recipe for success – We just need Mr Murdoch to confirm it! MySpace also recently announced the launch of MySpaceTV, a video sharing site to compete against YouTube.
