Verizon Wireless has announced today that its customers will be the first in North America to be able to record video with their phones, before uploading the content directly to YouTube.

In order to take advantage of the service, Verizon Wireless users need to update their YouTube accounts with their wireless phone numbers by visiting a section of the site dedicated to mobile phones, found here.

Once an individual’s details have been configured, they can simply text their video as a MMS at their standard rate to YTUBE 98823, after which their recorded footage should magically appear on the site within minutes.

YouTube Going Mobile

The function follows that struck by Verizon Wireless and YouTube for customers with V CAST-enabled phones in November last year, who can access a selection of YouTube videos through the YouTube channel on V CAST for a daily or monthly fee.

Today’s announcement reflects the longstanding wishes of YouTube co-founders, Chad Hurley and Steve Chen, who have previously cited a mobile-accessible YouTube as the next logical step in the site’s growth.

Apple’s iPhone includes a dedicated YouTube player, but this is the first time that seamless recording and posting of videos from phones to YouTube has been possible - guaranteeing even more ‘hilarious pets’ videos, we imagine.
