Gemstar starting online video search

30 sec read

Gemstar LogoGemstar, the company famous for its TV guides, for providing listing data to millions of EPGs, and for suing companies that operate their own EPG (it tried to sue Digeo and TiVo), is deciding to get into the whole internet video phenomenon.

It is going to be a video search engine that will aggregate professional content from ABC and Fox and other video portals such as AOL and Google, rather than focusing on the user generated content on sites like YouTube and Metacafe.

A TV Guide company becoming a guide for online video seems like a logical step, but Gemstar already have plenty of competition for their online version of a TV Guide. To top this off they are entering the video search arena very late and against some real technology innovators including AOL’s Truveo, Google and Blinkx.
