The WB Network brand was once synonymous with a number of big TV shows, but after being abandoned two years ago, it disappeared overnight. Where to next? The Web of course, which offers a lifeline for networks not deemed fit for traditional television.

Warner Brothers announced in April that it would be bringing back formerly dead The WB Network TV brand. The ad supported video on demand venture would include two sites, TheWB.com and KidsWB.com.

From Beta To Public

TheWB.com then launched in private beta at the beginning of June. At the time, the site was said to be half-finished and containing only a few episodes of a few shows.

Now, two months later and a date has been set for a full public launch. Warner Bros. has until August 27th to iron out all of the original problems as that’s when we’ll all be able to visit the site and make our own minds up.

Old And New TV

The online TV portal is playing host to a number of shows, with a mixture of old classics and new shows from the likes of McG (Sorority Fever) and Gossip Girl producer Josh Schwartz.

Classic shows to be given the repeat treatment include All Of Us, Blue Water High, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dangerous, Gilmore Girls, One Tree Hill, Smallville, and The OC.

Not Televised?

The site is being billed as “the next great network that won’t be televised.” This is despite the fact that Comcast will be making 1,000 episodes from the Warner Bros. TV library available through its cable video-on-demand service. So it kind of will be televised.

Other deals will see content from TheWB.com appearing on Facebook, Filmcast.com, and AOL. WBTVG issued a statement regarding the launch, which read:

“TheWB.com affirms our new media business strategy to build new brands and programming destinations, create compelling original online content and to distribute that content on all platforms in ways that best serve consumers and advertisers.”

Conclusions

AdWeek reports that Warner Bros. may be using the site as a trial to see if TheWB brand can draw enough of the 18-34 female audience in to warrant a WB cable TV network.

I hope it is a success as it will be another feather in the cap for the worth of networks putting their content on the Web. Unfortunately, as I’m resident in the UK, I won’t be able to enjoy the site – damn those territory licensing agreements.

She started out as a writer on TechCrunch, but is now exclusively involved in the visual side of things. After making her own tech news show called Textra, CNET came calling and gave her the Loaded show.

Del Conte Interview

She’s given an interview to Blogger Talks where she talks about the growth of Web-based video, the success of each of her shows, and how much work goes in to having a four-times weekly Internet video show.

She reveals that she was at first apprehensive from switching from the written word, to delivering news and opinions on screen instead. She got over the nervousness though, and now does it solely for a living.

Hard Work But Worth It

CBS recently bought CNET, and she also talks about how that has impacted on things. Overall, she states that video is a much harder medium to work in than text-based journalism.

She sums up by telling us all to break out the webcam, a few of which we have reviewed recently, and doing it for ourselves. Not all of us will be successful, but it could still be fun.

Big plans are rumoured to be afoot for the BBC’s online plans. Only a week after the new iPlayer 2.0 was unveiled in beta testing, there are new proposals being talked about that could change the nature of the service completely.

The BBC iPlayer is already a fantastic service available to everyone in the UK, allowing viewers to stream or download any BBC programmes from the last seven days.

The improved version of the iPlayer is already a big step up, integrating radio and television in to the one service, a larger playback window, and an automatic bookmarking feature.

Pre-Booking Function On Way

One of the other features, allowing you to view programmes coming up in the next three days forms the basis for the first of the new improvements. In my article about the iPlayer 2.0, I suggested this would lead to bigger things, and that is now happening.

According to Digital Spy, the BBC has now formally proposed to add a download pre-ordering function to the iPlayer. The proposal first be consulted in public, before hopefully being approved by the BBC Trust.

Taking Over From Traditional TV

If this does get approved, it would allow users would be able to book either single programmes or full series up to seven days before they air on normal television. The iPlayer would then download the programme at an optimum time for all parties.

The chances are that this would happen before the show was broadcast on television, but thanks to the DRM employed by the BBC, the programme would be unviewable until after it has aired. The BBC said:

“Pre-booking is a relatively simple addition to the iPlayer that will bring benefits for users and, in terms of reduced costs, for ISPs, and that would have limited potential for negative market impact.”

BBC1 To Go Live Online

The second big piece of news, which I somehow missed last month, is the rumour that the BBC want to broadcast BBC1 live online. If this turns out to be true, then the implications are quite far-reaching.

As Pocket Lint has suggested, this would raise question marks over the licence fee, as while computers are already included in the range of devices subject to a licence fee charge, a strict system would need to be in place to ensure no-one in any other country was able to view it.

Television is certainly evolving and digital content online is at the forefront of that revolution. The BBC are doing a brilliant job of staying one step ahead of the competition and raising the stakes for other broadcasters to try and beat.

If you doubted the traction that Web video is currently gaining, then today’s announcement from Google and the creator of hit animated show Family Guy will surely prove the trend is edging upwards once and for all.

Google has inked a deal with Seth MacFarlane which sees the latter creating original content purely for the Web, which Google will then distribute around the Internet using its AdSense advertising system.

Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy

The project, which is set to be called Seth MacFarlane’s Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy, will not be officially unveiled until September, but The New York Times has today got the scoop on the revolutionary plan for distribution.

Web video, and original content on the Web, has been growing for a good while now, but the big problem facing content-creators is the lack of a solid business model for making money from the venture. Google’s plans for MacFarlane’s work could set a new precedent in this field.

Using AdSense For Distribution

Essentially, Google will use AdSense to syndicate the programme to thousands of websites where fans of MacFarlane and Family Guy are expected to visit. This could include fan sites, forums and the like.

But rather than the typical static AdSense advert you and I are very used to, Google will place a clip from the Cavalcade. The Cavalcade will consist of 50 two-minute animated shorts, for which MacFarlane is said to have created a whole host of new characters for.

Advertising will then be incorporated in to the clips in a variety of different ways. Some will include a pre-roll advert before the clip plays, while other will take the form of an ever-present banner sitting underneath the playing clip.

MacFarlane Paid Handsomely

MacFarlane is also involved in producing some of the adverts which will run alongside the Cavalcade, and has reportedly been paid a substantial fee for doing so. MacFarlane will receive a percentage of the advertising revenue from the project, which could equal quite a hefty figure.

Google is calling the distribution service the Google Content Network, and has already dabbled in using it for distributing original content in a deal with The Washington Post back in May, but this is a massively more important step up for the system of distribution.

Huge Revenue Potential

Karl Austen, a lawyer who worked on the deal said:

“We believe the revenue could be formidable. What is exciting is that this is a way to monetize the Internet immediately. Instead of creating a Web site and hoping Seth’s fans find it, we are going to push the content to where people are already at.”

This experiment could pave the way for some very lucrative deals in distributing original content over the Web, which with off-line TV ratings dwindling at a rate of knots, could be an important step in the evolution of television.

NBC hates Apple, or at least iTunes. However, that doesn’t mean it hates iPhones, iPod Touches, or people who own these devices. If you need proof, then read on.

Despite having a major bust-up last year over NBC shows on iTunes, which resulted in NBC removing all of their content from Apple’s service, Alley Insider reports that they are now offering full episodes of two of their most popular shows on the iPhone.

DRM, Price & Advert Free

What’s more, they are available for free, without adverts, and in unprotected Quicktime format. Is this the same NBC that has tried to control pricing and DRM issues?

To get these episodes, all you need to do is go to nbc.com on your iPhone or iPod Touch, and click where NBC invites users to “WATCH FULL EPISODES!”

A Strange Move

This move is very strange, for a few different reasons. First of all there’s the no love lost issue between the two companies, and then there’s the fact that Hulu, which also distributes NBC content, stream in Flash, which the iPhone does not currently support.

The quality of the streams is said to be bad, and if you exit the Safari browser, then you have to restart the download all over again, and with huge files, this can be a long job.

However, it’s still amazing to see NBC shows on Apple devices, and a boon to all iPhone owners who love the two shows.
