hulu-logoThe long-rumored premium, paid-for version of Hulu could be coming next month. The price? $9.95 per month, which some are suggesting is excessive, especially if advertising remains in place.

Premium Hulu

Last year saw the first talk of a premium, paid-for Hulu emerge. Rupert Murdoch seemed to be leading the charge, but other execs soon backed him.

Worries that Hulu would become a fully paid-for service were tempered by an assurance from CEO Jason Kilar, who promised that there will always be a free option for those unwilling or uninterested in paying.

As soon as the Apple iPad was unveiled, talk of a Hulu app also emerged. It’s highly likely this will form part of the premium service, only being available to those willing to pay for the privilege of streaming video to their tablet.

ABC LogoABC was the first U.S. TV network to release an app specifically designed for the Apple iPad. And its eagerness to support the device is paying dividends, with iPad users lapping up the free content.

How long until the other networks follow suit?

Apple iPad

Apple released the iPad on April 3, a few months after unveiling the long-gestating tablet device to the world. Apple claims to have sold 500,000 iPads in its first week on sale, meaning the international release has been put back by a whole month.

The iPad is somewhere between an oversized iPod Touch and a tablet computer, depending on who you believe. But the truth is that Apple has created a new form factor which could revolutionize the world, with online video part of that revolution.

hulu-logoWe’ve known Hulu has been doing well for traffic for a while now, but it hasn’t ever revealed any details pertaining to its finances before. Until now.

But while it may already be profitable, Hulu is still looking at introducing a subscription-based model in addition to its advertising-based one. And an iPad app could be just the thing it needs.

Hulu

Hulu has now been with us for over two years after launching fully in early 2008. Traffic has risen steadily in that time, with the one billion videos streamed milestone being reached in December 2009.

Its success is hardly surprising as here is a free service offering premium television shows to everyone in the U.S., and with a finely-tuned user interface, and few enough adverts to keep viewers happy and watching.

Lots of MoneyAs we surf the Web, it is now very common to see video advertising sitting happily alongside text and display advertising. But while all advertising can have a positive impact, it appears online video ads are the best bet for companies or brands to use.

Online Video Advertising

Online video advertising has grown as the Web has matured. I well remember the days when any form of online video was a pipe dream due to modem connections, but now with broadband we can even devote bandwidth to video advertisements we may never notice or click on.

Many companies are now seeing the potential in video advertising, and as EyeView’s recent video marketing quiz made clear, the medium can have a big impact on interaction and brand awareness.

Lots of MoneyYouTube was in existence for 18 months before Google acquired it. And it was probably just as well the search giant did, because the burgeoning online video site was massively expensive to run, and there wasn’t any sign of profit being made any time soon.

Google Vs. Viacom

The Google vs. Viacom legal battle is rapidly approaching its crescendo, with both sides likely to meet in court and tell their own side of the story regarding the copyright infringements that formed a big part of the site’s early days.

As part of the recently-revealed legal documents, confidential profit and loss information was uncovered. Which NewTeeVee has used to build a picture of how YouTube was financed before Google took the site over in October 2006.

TubeMogul LogoNot content with measuring detailed analytics across the online video sector, TubeMogul has started to sell video advertising as well, launching its Play Time video ad platform. And it’s already seeing promising results from the endeavor.

TubeMogul

TubeMogul was the first dedicated online video analytics firm, enabling content creators to track the performance of their videos over a number of online video services.

But that clearly wasn’t enough for the company, which has now launched Play Time, its video advertising platform. And the firm is already seeing results from the year-long beta.

EyeView LogoHow much do you know about video marketing? The chances are very little, unless it’s your business to know. Which is where EyeView comes in. And the company has created a quiz which both tests and educates on the subject.

EyeView

The Web offers a whole new platform for advertisers to sell their wares. But as with every other medium, there are ways of increasing the success of campaigns.

EyeView offers video solutions for advertisers, having spent the last three years working for and with big names such as Google, YouTube, Yahoo!, HP, and eBay.

EyeView wants to know how much you know about works and what doesn’t in the realm of video advertising, and has created a Video Marketing Quiz which everyone can take.
